LUBEC – Harriett O. Stuart, 96, wife of the late Vance E. Stuart, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 9, 2010. She was born April 4, 1913, in Perry, the sixth of nine daughters to Charles and Ada Cook Outhouse. Harriett grew up in Eastport, attended local schools and was a member of the Class of 1931 of Shed High School. In addition to her duties as a wife and mother, Harriett spent many years helping support Christian Temple Church with sales, suppers and the quilting circle. She was also a member of Lubec Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, of which she had held every office. She also did nursing at Eastport Hospital and Ocean View Nursing Home and had worked at several area sardine factories. She was predeceased by her parents, husband; and eight sisters, Jennie, Edna, Myrtle, Sara, Hilda, Beatrice, Bertha and Inez; daughter-in-law, Ada Matthews; two grandchildren, Brent and Mandy Matthews; and a very special lifelong friend, Myrtle (Lingley) Chaffey. She is survived by her four children, Clarence Matthews of Lancaster, Calif., Richard Matthews and his wife, Linda, of Tucson, Ariz., Linda (Matthews) Zwicker and her husband, Hugh, of Standish and Vance E. Stuart Jr. of Norway; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Avis Cox of Hancock; a brother-in-law, Paul W. Richardson of Eastport; nieces, nephews and cousins. At Harriett’s request, there will be no visiting hours or service. Burial and committal will take place at a later date.
