BANGOR – Kern N. Foss, 97, husband of 60 years to the late Marion (Reed) Foss, died March 16, 2010, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born April 12, 1912, in Moscow, the son of Lloyd S. and Eunice M. (Nottage) Foss. Kern graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1927, at the age of 15. He went on to graduate from Maine School of Commerce, Husson University. Kern was a salesman for Sunshine Biscuit Co. for 36 years, and later was employed as a storekeeper at Bangor Mental Health Institute, until his retirement. He was a 60-year member of United Commercial Travelers, Maine State Retirees Association and Rising Virtue Masonic Lodge No. 10 AF & AM of Bangor. Kern enjoyed bowling from a very young age, and continued all through his life. Surviving are his three children, Judith C. Messer of Bangor, Robert E. Foss and his wife, Marilyn Zilic, of Madison, Wis., and Joan F. Decato and her husband, Herb, of Upper St. Clair, Pa.; six grandchildren, Jill Abbott, Mark E. Messer, Pam Johnson and her husband, T.J., Kyle Zilic and his wife, Maretta, Nicole DiMarco and her husband, Ross, and Reed J. Decato; six great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Smith of Bangor; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Patricia Pavliska of Bangor. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Karen L. Carter; a sister, Myrna Austin; and two brothers, Paul and Carl Foss. Relatives and friends are invited to call 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 20, with the Rev. Dr. Rex H. Garrett, director of chaplaincy services at Eastern Maine Medical Center, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, after the service.
