BANGOR and LAUDERHILL, Fla. – Mary (Ducas) Tsoulas died March 19, 2010, at Heartland Health Center, Lauderhill, Fla., where she had been a resident for several years. She was born in 1922 in Somerville, Mass., where she was raised by her parents, Antonio and Diamond (Karageorge) Ducas. In the 1940s she worked as a bookkeeper and a phlebotomist in Boston. She married George L. Tsoulas in 1950 and moved with him to Bangor, where she spent the next 35 years raising her family of six children, to whom she was devoted. During those years she was a very active member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church and participated in the Philoptochos Society, sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She loved to entertain, was a wonderful cook and hosted many memorable gatherings and holiday celebrations for family and friends. She loved beauty in all its forms and at mid-life took up art in a serious way, taking many classes and producing numerous works in watercolor, acrylics, charcoal and pastels. One of her most notable works was a series of charcoals she did of Jesus, Mary and many saints and other biblical figures which she turned into lithographs. These pieces were much admired and are cherished by those who own them. In the mid-1980s she divorced and moved to Florida, where she spent the remainder of her life. She was predeceased by her brother, Angelo; and her beloved eldest son, Timothy, who died unexpectedly in 1987. She is survived by five children, their spouses and partners, and three grandchildren: Diane L. Tsoulas and her husband, Jay F. Abernethy, of Easthampton, Mass., and their daughter, Kate Alexandra Tsoulas Abernethy of Philadelphia; Kenneth G. Tsoulas and his wife, Wendy and their son, Nicholas, of Hermon; Katherine L. Tsoulas and her partner, William Almodovar and her son, Shane Timothy Wilson, of Bangor; Jonathan A. Tsoulas of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and Karen D. Tsoulas and her husband, James Dixon, of Arcadia, Calif.; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and their families. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 25, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, March 26, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 90 Sanford St., Bangor. Burial at Mount Hope cemetery afterward.
