NORRIDGEWOCK – Morton B. Fine, 83, fondly known as “Mike,” ended his struggle with cancer Saturday, March 20, 2010, surrounded with the support of his family at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Waterville. He was born March 8, 1927, in Washington, D.C., son of the late Samuel and Esther (Phillips) Fine. Morton will be most remembered for his devotion to the service of our country, his legacy leaves behind a 26-year service in the U.S. Navy, retiring at age 42 as a lieutenant commander. He served on numerous ships and stations with many shipmates too many to mention, all of whom alive and passed will be remembered. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Retired Officers Association and Fleet Reserve Association. Morton leaves behind four children: sons, Daniel Fine of Butler, Pa., and Glen Fine and family of Cornville, daughter, Marolyn Fine and her daughter of Dover-Foxcroft, and his best friend and son, Matthew Fine of Norridgewock; two sisters, Sylvia Venezky and her husband, Milton, of Silver Springs, Md., and Evelyn Shulman and her husband, Allan, of Clarksville, Md.; his mother-in-law and friend, Marolyn Cooper of Hartland; mother of his children, Leisa Fine and her companion, Ken Lybrook, of Concord; numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by seven siblings; and one daughter, Lilia Fine. The family thanks all the doctors and nurses that were a part of Morton’s life in the last two weeks. Also, a thank you to all of his good friends and neighbors in the community. He spoke of all of you. To Dr. Kenneth Baker and his staff, thank you for your care from beginning to end. At Morton’s request there will be no viewing hours or funeral held. A private graveside service will be held at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta.
