MILLINOCKET – Kenneth Robert Helstrom, 62, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at a Bangor hospital after a long year of battling cancer. He was born April 27, 1947, in Millinocket, the son of Donald and Grace (Porier) Helstrom Sr. Kenny graduated from Stearns High School, Class of 1965. He lived his life as he had told his brother at age 14, “You can’t get to the bottom of the mountain unless you point your skis and tuck.” Kenny worked for Great Northern Paper Co. in the woodlands division, both at the garage and on the river. In later years, he could be seen daily getting his five miles in on Rice Farm Road with his trusty friend, Buckwheat, or heading down to Seeboo for Friday night Scrabble. Fall brought on football season and his crusade with the Patriots. He was predeceased by his father. In addition to his mother of Millinocket, he is survived by a daughter, Mary Beth Helstrom of Harrisonville, Va.; a son, Derek Helstrom of Hampden; a brother, Donald Helstrom and his wife, Gail, of Woodville; an uncle, Cecil Helstrom of Old Town; an aunt, Lela Chapman of New Jersey; two nieces, Laura Manzo of Millinocket and Ursula Hawkes of Dedham, and their families; special friends, Don and Paula Pelletier of West Sebois, who for the past year have been just a phone call away; and the friends and neighbors who have checked in and offered to help, including Snow Shoveler Supreme, Real Cyr.
