DETROIT, Maine – Thelma Pearl (Scribner) Ray, 93, took her final journey from her home Sunday, March 28, 2010. She was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Vanceboro, the daughter of Harold L. and Effie (Grant) Scribner. Thelma spent her childhood in Vanceboro and her beloved Canterbury, New Brunswick. On March 2, 1935, she married Joseph Franklin Ray, also of Vanceboro. They eventually moved to Hartford, Conn., but in 1957 they settled their family in Detroit, Maine, where Thelma happily resided until this past Sunday. Raising seven children, her home was always bustling with activity. Her door was always open to family, friends and strangers. She loved visiting with everyone. She worked for many years with her husband “Joe,” cooking for his Saladmaster demonstrations. She enjoyed the many trips they took together, but she preferred to be at home in her farmhouse with her family. Thelma was a former member of Detroit Good Cheer Club, had attended High Street Congregational Church, Newport, and was an avid doll collector. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. Ray; a son, Perry J. Raye; and a sister, Anna Saulnier. Thelma is survived by her daughters, Dale and her husband, Robert Seaburg, of Chester, Conn., and Donna Bizeau and her companion, Richard Yacavone, of Palmyra; four sons and their wives, Dennis and Cynthia Raye of Leesburg, Fla., Frank and Heidi Raye of St. Albans, Paul and Ginny Raye of Detroit, Maine, and Wayne and Jerri Ray of Detroit, Maine; her brother and his wife, Harold and Mickey Scribner of Skowhegan; her sister, Theda Colby of Waterville; 24 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and lifelong friends. The family thanks Wanda Farmer and Nancy Booth, whose loving care and compassion made Thelma’s last months so happy and comfortable. At Thelma’s request there are no public visitations. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, April 2, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport, with Pastor William Lawrence officiating.
