Growing up in a border town (Calais) means watching the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens play hockey every Saturday night on CHSJ-TV.
None of the games I ever watched was etched in my memory, as the one I recently watched, the University of Maine Black Bears playing the Boston College Eagles.
Awesome is all I can say of the performance by the Maine Black Bears. For Maine to have been down two goals with just over five minutes to play and tie the score at 6-6 with 28 seconds left to go and send the game into overtime — they were absolutely incredible.
The University of Maine Black Bears have nothing to feel bad about. They all played like pros and we’re very proud of them.
Thanks for the memory!

Brad Viles’ hiking stories are an asset
I consider Brad Viles’ contributions to the readers of the Bangor Daily News to be of great value.
My husband and I embarked on a hike we’d never imagined existed. I consider it to be one Maine’s best-kept secrets!
This hike is called the Black Mountain Ridge Trail. What a beauty! The hike through the forest is lovely, but oh what waits for the successful hiker who reaches the top! We faced in one direction and soaked in the magnificent view of the mountains on Mount Desert. But when turning around, on this bright and sunshine-drenched day, there to the north shined the “diamond in the sky,” as my dear friend calls it, a.k.a. [Mount] Katahdin! Dressed in the glory of winter dress, it was visible to us even from there.
In difficult times, hikes like these are food for the soul; something to help get the right perspective on life.
