ABBOT – Alice Katherine (Hescock) Weymouth, 81, died April 4, 2010, surrounded by her family at her home, after a brief battle with cancer. She was born Dec. 29, 1928, in Abbot, daughter of Norris C. and Cordelia (Tuthill) Hescock. Alice served the town of Abbot for more than three decades. Her fiscal responsibility, innovativeness and generous donation of her time had been proven time and time again as she had served in the various positions of treasurer, town clerk, tax collector, computer guru and jack-of-all-trades. Her advocacy of landowner rights has been displayed through the many years of being on the planning board and making her feelings be heard. Alice was not only involved in town affairs, but she also supported her community in many other ways. She was a founding member of Piscataquis Valley Pony Club, served on SAD 4 School Board, was active in the sports boosters, assisted with the Girl Scouts, was an active member of Guilford Alumni Association, as well as an active member of Abbot Historical Society. Alice was also well known as K1VAV in the amateur radio world and served as a liaison by radioing messages for the Air Force recovery crew and their families during the B-52 crash on Elephant Mountain, Jan. 24, 1963. Being from a family with a history of living in the town for more than 150 years, Alice was the definition of history and family ties. After raising her seven children on the farm on West Road, she easily moved to the role of grandmother by welcoming her 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren to the family. Many people knew Alice and remembered her for her dedicated years of service at the town office. Others remember buying a quart of strawberries or a pound of butter from her on the farm. After retiring, she could be found reminiscing of her days traveling in Europe in search of family history and even bagging a turkey last season, but she was happiest when surrounded by her family, when they visited her on the farm. She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Everett M. “Wink” Weymouth; a daughter, Terrill “Terry” (Weymouth) Drinkwater; a sister, Eugenia Packard; and a brother, Robert Hescock. She is survived by four sons, Howard and his wife, Pamela, Gerald and his wife, Wanda, Roderic and his wife, Beth, and Timothy and his wife, Diana, all of Abbot; two daughters, Heather Weymouth and her partner, Mark Bunker, of Abbot and Chandra Kane and her husband, Douglas, of Monson; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including Roger Packard and his wife, Dianna, of Abbot; and special caregiver, niece, Brenda Weymouth of Searsport. The family gives special thanks to Marcia Walden and Pam Doderman of Community Health and Counseling, Dover-Foxcroft. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, at Crosby & Neal, 21 Oak St., Guilford, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor A. Maurice Neal officiating. Burial will be after at Abbot Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Community Health and Counseling, 1093 West Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426.
