BUCKSPORT – Henry Alogt Mattson, 99, passed away Monday, April 12, 2010, at a Bangor hospital after a short illness. Henry was born Aug. 13, 1910, in Svenneby, Sweden, the son of Axel and Hilda Mattson. He left his home country to find a new life at age 20 and worked for 42 years at St. Regis Paper Co., Bucksport. On retirement he spent many hours restoring antique clocks, traveling to his native Sweden, and spending wonderful times with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He married and raised eight children in Bucksport. Henry was the happiest when he was with his family. Henry was an active member of Franklin Street United Methodist Church, serving many years as treasurer and also repaired and maintained the steeple clock of the church. He was an active member of Felicity Lodge No. 19 of the Masons, Bucksport, as well as Order of the Eastern Star. Henry is survived by his sons, Donald and wife, Evora, of Bucksport, Perry and wife, Pearl, of Surry, Henry Jr. and special friend, Pat, of Bucksport, and Chris and wife, Melissa, of Minocqua, Wis.; as well as his daughters, Hilda Cameron of Warwick, R.I., Astrid Raymond and husband, Richard, of Orland, and Linda Vinton and husband, Byron, of Bucksport; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, who loved him passionately. He is also survived by one sister, Kristina Larsson of Bengtsfors, Sweden. In addition to his parents, Henry was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Helen (Lowell); one daughter, Mary Gonzales; one brother, Johan of Goteborg, Sweden; and two sisters, Mary of Goteborg, Sweden, and Astrid Bourgon of Bucksport. A celebration of Henry’s life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 15, at Franklin Street United Methodist Church with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Henry’s memory may be made to Franklin Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1727, Bucksport, ME 04416 or Buck Memorial Library, P.O. Box DD, Bucksport, ME 04416. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
