STOCKTON SPRINGS and SEARSPORT – Robert L. Tufts, 75, died April 11, 2010, in Bangor. He was born July 5, 1934, in Lewiston, the son of Edith Tufts. Bob graduated from Kingfield High School and Farmington State Teachers College. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Signal Corps. He taught school locally for 30 years, starting in Liberty and finishing at Searsport High School, where he coached boys’ basketball, baseball and golf. He also served as athletic director for the district. He coached state championship teams in both basketball and baseball with Searsport. Bob was a very active 40-year member of Searsport Lions Club and served two terms in the Maine House of Representatives. He loved hunting, golf, the flea market and spending time at hunting camp. Bob was also a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He will be missed by many. He was predeceased by his grandmother who raised him, Eunice Tufts. Survivors include his ex-wife and companion of 50 years, Judy Tufts; three children, Roland and Susan Tufts of Topsham, Julie Tufts and fiance, Kerry Karst, of Brewer, and Tom Tufts of Frankfort; two half brothers, Richard Nile of Wilton and James Nile of North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Andrew and Caroline. Friends may call noon-2 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, where services will begin 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s memory may be made to Searsport Lions Club, Prospect Street, Searsport.
