OLD TOWN – Richard “Dick” E. Garrett, 71, died April 12, 2010, with his loving family at his side at his home, after a lengthy battle with illness. He was born March 19, 1939, in Rumford, the son of Aurel and Geneva Garrett. Dick graduated from Mexico High School, Class of 1958. He was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball; football being his favorite. He is remembered by many for his athleticism during his high school career, passing this on to many members of his family. He graduated from the University of Maine with a master’s degree in psychology. He married Janice Ionta and then went on to serve in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Boston with his brother. After his time in the service, he and his family settled in Old Town. He enjoyed life to the fullest experiencing all that this world has to offer with many stories to be shared and remembered. He became a loving and devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and member of his church and will be deeply missed by many. He is survived by his mother, Geneva Garrett of Mexico, Maine; brother, Levi Garrett; sister, Pearl McPeek and husband, Harold, of Mexico, Maine; son, Randy of Portland; daughter, Holly and husband, Tione; son, Seth and wife, Manuela, of Gorham; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father, Aurel Garret; brothers, David and Bruce Garrett; and sister, Pamela Martin. A service will be held 4 p.m. Friday, April 16, at Bethesda Chapel with Paster Jim Russ officiating.
