COLUMBIA and WEWAHITCHKA, Fla. – Nancy H. Greene, 75, died unexpectedly Monday, March 22, 2010, in Wewahitchka, Fla. She was born Aug. 14, 1934, in Portland, daughter of Marion (Bemis) and Clinton Perley Hubbard. As a child, Nancy enjoyed spending time at Kezar Lake, Lovell, where she spent countless hours playing with her cousin, Larry. She graduated from Portland’s Deering High School in 1952, as a member of the National Honor Society. Nancy attended Colby College, where she met her roommate and lifelong friend, Janet (Nordgren) Meryweather of Salisbury Cove. Nancy was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, Women’s Judicial Board, Panhellenic Council and Cap and Gown Honorary Society. She graduated from Colby with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology in 1956, and married her college sweetheart, Abbott Otto Greene, June 30, 1956, in Portland. Nancy and Abbott enjoyed traveling the world during Abbott’s career in the Air Force and as an airline pilot. She made friends everywhere and loved to learn new recipes and culinary skills from the various peoples and cultures she encountered throughout her journeys. She was active in many community organizations in Columbia, including her service as the first female chairman of the board of selectmen. She was a Cub Scout leader, a behind-the-scenes member of the Columbia Players, and even wrote, along with Clarence Drisko, the history of the town of Columbia and Columbia Falls for Columbia’s Bicentennial in 1976. Nancy did extensive genealogical research for both her and Abbott’s family, eventually becoming a proud member of Society of Mayflower Descendants. She even penned a series of children’s stories, some of which were published. Nancy was very artistic; she participated in many craft fairs and sold her Santa faces and angel shells in stores all around the country. In addition, she painted glass bottles, salmon cans, plant pots and on canvas, all from the comfort of her studio. Nancy loved being outside, whether she was planting flowers or playing with one of her beloved pets. However her favorite activity was spending time with her family at her home overlooking the heath in Columbia, which she said was the most beautiful place on Earth. Nancy was predeceased by her parents, Clinton and Marion. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Abbott; her two sons, Wade C. Greene and his wife, Kathy, of Columbia, and Peter F.
