RIPLEY – George F. Greaves, 85, died April 20, 2010, at a Dexter nursing home. He was born Dec. 12, 1924, in Monarda, son of Stanley and Annie (Gallagher) Greaves. He attended Dexter High School and left school to serve in the Marine Corps. During World War II while serving in the South Pacific, George was wounded at Iwo Jima, and was awarded a Purple Heart. He worked in the construction business for several years and later worked for more than 40 years for H.L. Tillson, Dexter, until his retirement. He was a member of Ripley United Methodist Church and North Dexter Grange. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary (Conner) Greaves; a brother, Merle; and a sister, Lena. He is survived by his wife, Leatrice Elaine (McLaughlin) Greaves of Ripley; a son and his wife, Lary and Rebecca Greaves of Ripley; three grandchildren, Dawnelle Arno of Parkman, John Greaves of Dexter and Megan Smith of Hancock; six great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Roger McLaughlin, Stanley Drake, Troy O’Neal and Roxanne Curtis; six stepgrandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; two brothers, A. Maurice Neal and his wife, Corinne, of Dexter and Clayton Neal of Bridgton; a sister, Gladys Packard and her husband, Arthur, of Cambridge; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, at Jackman Corner Cemetery, Sangerville, with Pastor Stephen Dean officiating.
