CASTINE and BANGOR – Paul J. Dailey Jr., 63, of Castine, died unexpectedly April 21, 2010, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Jan. 9, 1947, in Boston, the son of Marie (McCarthy) and Paul Dailey Sr. Paul spent his early years in Boston before moving to Wakefield, Mass. He was a graduate of Wakefield High School where he played golf and ran track. After high school, Paul attended Huntington Preparatory School, Boston, for one year. He continued his education at the University of Maine, Orono, where he graduated in 1970. While at UMO, he earned a varsity letter in track and played on the golf team. He also was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Paul’s interest in golf led him to pursue membership into the Professional Golfers Association of America. Paul was extremely proud of his affiliation with the PGA and was most recently recognized as a Quarter Century member. Throughout Paul’s career in golf he served as head professional at Northport Golf Club, Piscataquis Golf Club, Lucerne Golf Club and most recently Castine Golf Club. Early in Paul’s career he became interested in the science of turf grass management. Paul’s lifelong commitment to education led him to enroll in the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he earned a degree in turf grass management. Soon after he became a member of Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America. At the time of his death he was proud to be superintendent of Castine Golf Club. Paul is survived by a brother, Michael of Beverly, Mass. Paul was a very special person to so many people in the golf community and outside of it. He was a great friend to all and will be sadly missed.
