MILFORD – Wayne Clifton Barker, 88, died April 29, 2010, at an Orono health care facility after a short illness. He was born May 22, 1921, in Enfield, the son of Fay and Blanche (Porter) Barker. Wayne served in the Army during World War II and then the Army Reserves from 1946-1949. He then settled in Milford where he had resided since. He drove a truck for PP Co. and Merrill Transport. Wayne operated Barker’s Mobil, Milford, for several years before purchasing a truck and working in the logging business in the winter and hauling gravel in the summer. After a few years he purchased the Mobil station and owned and operated Barker’s Service Center for many years until his retirement in 1983. After his retirement, he worked part-time for A&S Motors, Lincoln. Wayne was also a member of Masonic Lodge, the Star in East No. 60, Old Town. Wayne served several years as second or third selectman for the town of Milford and as first selectman for several years after his retirement. Wayne is survived by his wife of 62 years, Fern (Burse) Barker; his son, Dale Barker of Milford; his daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Edward Brown of Milford, Janet and Donald Davis of Saco, and Kathryn and Charles Heinonen of Bangor; seven grandchildren, Susan Keel, Bryan Steel II, Johanna DiCianni, Kendra Brown, Mallory Brown, Kelly Heinonen and Elizabeth Heinonen; three great-grandchildren, Nathan and Caleb Keel and Addison DiCianni; one brother, Floyd Barker of Rochester, N.H.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Norris and Elwood Barker; and sisters, Evelyn Churchill and Barbara Piper. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, May 7, at First Congregational Church, Milford. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Wayne’s name may be made to American Diabetes Association, P.O.
