ALLAGASH – Charles Gardner passed away peacefully April 29, 2010, surrounded by his family at a Fort Kent health care facility. He was born Aug. 27, 1922, in Allagash, the son of Charles Sr. and Charlotte (Mullins) Gardner. Charles went to work early in the local industries. He loved sharing stories of his days as a log runner on the St. John River and driving potato truck. He later worked construction in Connecticut until his retirement. He retired to Allagash where he most enjoyed spending time with family and being outdoors. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of more than 60 years, Ellen (O’Leary) Gardner; one sister, Lucy Gardner; and by two special children, Beverly Tracy and Colburn Gardner. Charles is survived by his son, Charles Gardner Jr. of Willimantic, Conn.; six daughters, Patricia Tracy of Mount Dora, Fla., Donna Harvey of Lebanon, Conn., Carla Donnelly of Portland, Mary Gagnon of Fort Kent, Jayne Jackson and Barbara Kelly of Allagash; a very special nephew, Joey Gardner of Allagash; 22 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Allagash Pentecostal Church, where funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday with graveside services afterward at Allagash Municipal Cemetery. Charles believed in charity and contributed to many throughout his life, including a longstanding relationship with Feed the Children Network. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Feed the Children, P.O. Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK 73101-0036. Arrangements are a service of Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent.
