HAMPDEN – Mattie (Gardner) Simpson, 85, wife of the late Foster “Doc” S. Simpson passed away April 29, 2010, at her residence. Mattie was born Oct. 14, 1924, in Merrill, daughter of the late Leroy G. and Nancy E. (Gerald) Gardner. Mattie attended schools in Merrill and was a 1942 graduate of Merrill High School. She then attended Maine School of Commerce, graduating in 1943. She worked for several years at Hampden Evans Shoe and for Spot Bilt. Mattie was an active member of the community, including Hampden Highlands Club, Star in the East Chapter No. 17 Order of the Eastern Star of Hampden and Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time in her gardens and flowers, and spending time with family and friends. Mattie will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to all. Mattie is survived by her two daughters, Brynn Severance and husband, Ken, and Michelle Pease and husband, David; grandchildren, Tonya Devlin and husband, Scott, Kristin Pease, Erin Pate and husband, Chris, and Michael Pease; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Kelli Devlin and Ella Pate; her sister, Elois Clampffer; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mattie was predeceased by her husband; brothers, Johnny and Herbert; and sisters, Flora, Ellen and Sophronia. Family and friends may visit 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, with the Rev. Kurt Herber, of Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, Hampden, officiating. Interment will be at Simpson’s Corner Cemetery, Dixmont. Memorial contributions in Mattie’s honor may be made to Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, 44 Kennebec Road, Hampden, ME 04444.
