The number of Maine cases of Lyme disease have increased from about 100 in 1990 to
900 in 2009. What can state health officials do to address this trend? Should physicians
routinely screen for the disease? Should there be a more vigorous public education
campaign about the ticks that carry the ailment? Should federal money be applied to
developing a vaccine or better screening techniques? For further debate: is global climate
change to blame for the tick expanding its range to Maine?
