MILLINOCKET and BANGOR – Dorothy E. Portwine, 86, died unexpectedly Sunday, May 9, 2010, at a Bangor hospital. She was born May 2, 1924, in Millinocket, the daughter of Joseph and Della (Boutaugh) Lyden. Dorothy was a graduate of Stearns High School, Class of 1942, and graduated from Madigan Memorial Hospital, Houlton, Class of 1946. She worked in hospitals in Rhode Island as a registered nurse for 35 years before her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Millinocket, and served on Millinocket Cemetery Committee. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 13 years, Fred A. “Pete” Portwine of Bangor; a son, Michael Carcieri of Southern California; two daughters, Mary Barsellos and her husband, Manny, of Rhode Island, and Dee Carcieri of Bangor; four stepchildren, Lois Berry and her husband, Donald, of Millinocket, Richard Portwine and his wife, Carol, of Gorham, Peter Portwine and his wife, Carla, of Millinocket, and Michael Portwine and his wife, Robin, of Millinocket; a brother, Joe Lyden of Elmyra Heights, N.Y.; a sister, Margaret Manzo of Millinocket; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 19 Colby St., Millinocket, with Deacon Danny Watson officiating. Private interment will be at a later date at Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Dorothy may be sent to Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field St., Millinocket, ME 04462.
