AUGUSTA – Dorothy M. Burke, 94, formerly of Tibbetts Street, died May 8, 2010, at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born March 18, 1916, in Bangor, the daughter of John Thomas Mooney and Laura Sarah (McCarthy) Mooney. Mrs. Burke was educated in Bangor and she received a bachelor’s degree in education from Farmington State Teachers College. She was employed as a special education teacher by the city of Augusta for 35 years. She previously taught at Beane School, Mount Vernon; and Hannibal Hamlin Elementary School, Bangor. Mrs. Burke was a communicant of St. Michael Parish at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. She was a member and past treasurer of St. Mary’s Guild, a charter member of St. Agnes Circle Daughters of Isabella, a member of Maine State Retirees Association and American Association of Retired Persons. Her husband, John T. Burke, died March 23, 1994. She was also predeceased by her parents; two brothers, James and John Mooney; two sisters, Margaret Wagner and Mary Stubbs; and two nieces, Johnine Weaver and Lisa Drake. Surviving are three nieces, Caylene Gustin of LaCrescenta, Calif., Susan Etheridge of Palm Desert, Calif., and Kathleen Terwilliger of Concord, Mass.; two nephews, Michael Burke of Nashville, Tenn., and Patrick Burke of Bangor; and her close friends, William and Gloria Fleming of Augusta. Friends may visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 17, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where the members of St. Agnes Circle Daughters of Isabella are asked to meet 6:15 p.m. for a prayer service. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated noon Tuesday, May 18, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will be afterward at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. Condolences may be expressed via the funeral home Web site at www.plummerfh.com.
