CROSS LAKE and CARIBOU – Edward G. Disy, 91, passed away May 14, 2010, at the place he loved most in life, his home at Cross Lake. Ed was born Nov. 25, 1918, in Caribou, the son of Tony and Mai Disy. Ed’s mother Mai died at a young age and his father Tony married Mary Soffayer, who shared in raising Ed from early childhood. Ed graduated from Caribou High School, Class of 1936. He served his country as a proud Marine in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a veteran of World War II serving extensively in the Pacific as an aviation navigator. Ed was honorably discharged from the Marines shortly after the conclusion of World War II having achieved the rank of master sergeant. After his time in the military Ed worked a variety of jobs having found his niche as a licensed pawnbroker and successfully operated his business, Caribou Trading Post, for 45 years. Ed was an avid bridge player traveling weekly to Fort Kent and Edmunston to play a game he truly enjoyed. In the game of bridge he achieved the honor of being a masters level bridge player, a designation not easily achieved. Ed was an avid golfer and was a member of Caribou and Fort Kent country clubs for a number of years. He was an outdoorsman and for many years he particularly enjoyed the sports of hunting and fishing and shared many outings with his family. He also took great pleasure in bird watching and feeding the ducks that would flock to his front lawn at the lake. One of his favorite pastimes was walks at night identifying the constellations he observed. Ed was proud of his Lebanese heritage and helped to instill some of the Lebanese customs within his family. Ed married Sylvia Chapman July 15, 1952, in Caribou. Together they raised a family of eight children. He is survived by his eight children: his sons, Edward Disy Jr. and his wife, Paula, of Barrington, N.H., Michael Disy of Delanson, N.Y., Lute Disy and his wife, Linda, of Jacksonville, Fla., Greg Disy and his wife, Kathie, of Caribou, Tony and his wife, Garnet, of Caribou; and his daughters, Toni Makarewicz of Snellville, Ga., Fran Day and her husband, Rick, of Bangor and Connie Brown of Madawaska Lake. He is also survived by his 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Bob Chapman and his wife, Adrienne, of Caribou; sister-in-law, Thelma Chapman of Caribou; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ed was predeceased by his wife, Sylvia, in 1999; his first grandchild, Edward G. Disy III; and his sisters, Mary Disy and Alice Cyr. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Lancaster-Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 2 p.m. Monday, May 17, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Caribou, with the Rev. Jean Paul Labrie, celebrant.
