CENTREVILLE, Md. – Patricia Ann Young died Sunday, May 16, 2010, after a short illness at University of Maryland Medical Center. She was daughter of the late Walter Carville and Helen Van Alst Britten of Glen Ridge, N.J., and the wife of Kent Young of Centreville, Md. and Corea. Ann and Kent met at Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, where she was a nursing student and he an intern. They were married in 1957 and recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Ann earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1963, Master of Science degree in education in 1964, Master of Arts degree in 1985 and Doctor of Education degree in 1972 from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned a Master of Divinity degree in 2009 from Bangor Theological Seminary. Her career included positions with Philadelphia School District evaluating education programs, as assistant director with New Jersey Department of Higher Education, deputy director of Center for Home Health Development in New Jersey and advancement for the Benedictine Sisters in Ridgely, Md. She was the central mover for many community outreach programs, such as Head Start and Day Care 100 in Burlington County, N.J., winter shelter for the homeless and Community Out-Reach Partnership in Center City Philadelphia at Trinity Memorial Church, and Re-Runs – a community second-hand shop in Centreville, Md., sponsored by St. Paul’s Parish to serve the disadvantaged. She also served many years on the board of Camp Wright and on the editorial board of Eastern Shore Episcopalian. She had special interests and talent in gardening, photography and cooking. Her German shorthair pointer, Credo, has been very close to her heart since he joined the family one year ago. Ann is survived by her husband, Kent; and their six children, Deborah and Hugh Carson, Peter and Donna Young, Courtney Young, Brooke and John Walker, David and Rose Young, and Honore Young; and nine grandchildren. She lives on in the memory of countless people she has touched and helped. There will be a memorial service of thanks for Ann and her life 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at St. Paul’s Parish, 301 South Liberty St., Centreville, Md. A service will be held at a later date in Bangor for her friends at Bangor Theological Seminary and in Hancock County.
