FARMINGDALE – Frederick Thomas Baird Jr., 90, died Monday, May 24, 2010, at Maine Veterans Home, Augusta. He was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of Frederick Thomas Baird Sr. and Ruth (Hight) Baird. Fred graduated from Bangor High School in 1937. He went on to attend Colby College and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1941. He enlisted and served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. After his retirement from the reserves, he was employed as a marine biologist for the state of Maine until retiring for the second time. After his employment with the state, Fred and his wife, Catherine, worked for International Telephone & Telegraph for the next 10 years, where they redeveloped the King and Bartlett Camps near Eustis into a trout fishing lodge for the company. Fred was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed fishing and gardening along side his wife of 64 years. His hobbies, as well as hers, also included training and raising Labrador retrievers. They had raised many dogs during the years, including their most recent best friend, Maggie O’Toole. Fred was predeceased by his wife, Kay, earlier this year, March 6, 2010; along with a brother, James; and a sister, Harriet. He is survived by a brother, Bernard Baird of Lewiston; a sister, Jean Hazelton of Rye, N.H.; several nieces and nephews, including Tom Hazelton and his wife, Catherine, of Newington, N.H. Relatives and friends are invited to visit 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. Fred and his wife, Catherine, will be buried together at Evergreen Cemetery, Milo, at a later date.
