HOULTON – Eugene P. Byron, 84, went home to be with his Lord May 27, 2010. Surrounded by his family, he died peacefully at his residence on Military Street. He was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Houlton, the son of Stearle J. and Carrie (Sawyer) Byron. Gene married Lavina Cogswell, Dec. 8, 1951, after returning home from serving in the U.S. Army in the Philippines and Japan from 1945 to 1947. He worked as a dairy farmer for more than 35 years and for the past 21 years has enjoyed brightening people’s lives delivering flowers for Chadwick Florist. He was a faithful member of Houlton Wesleyan Church and his pastimes, included gardening, bird watching and visiting with friends and family. He especially treasured time spent with his grandchildren for whom he prayed each and every day. More important than what he did is who he was. Gene was a gentleman who loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was kind and patient; a sincere man of integrity. He was a man of few words who commanded attention when he did speak. He was dearly loved and his was a life well lived. Gene is survived by his wife, Lavina (Cogswell) Byron of Houlton; his daughter, Carole Bates and her husband, John, of Houlton; his son, Roger Byron and his wife, Laurie, of Benton; Jeff Turcotte, who was like a son to Gene, and his wife, Cheryl, of Cadyville, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Peter Bates, James Bates, Leah Bates, all of Houlton, Caleb Byron, Elayna Byron and Lydia Byron, all of Benton; two special sisters-in-law, Geraldine Dunn and Norma Bates, both of Houlton; one brother-in-law William Cogswell of New York City; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and his sister, Marjorie Stewart. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Dunn Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Houlton Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Wayne Robertson and the Rev. David Rowe officiating. Interment will be at Linneus Cemetery.
