BANGOR – Arnold Cook Lyons, 85, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010. He was born June 25, 1924, in Skowhegan, the son of Arthur and Effie (Cook) Lyons. Arnold was a 1942 graduate of Skowhegan High School. On Nov. 16, 1942, he married Grace M. Stoodley, the love of his life, in Skowhegan, where they resided for many years before moving to Bangor. Arnold was a decorated World War II veteran. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. He earned the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his heroic action in various battles across Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He spent most of his professional life working in the shoe industry as a hand sewer and pattern maker. He was a member of Shoe Executives of Maine. Arnold was an avid hunter and fisherman. One of his favorite memories was the 2004 three-generation Maine moose hunt with his two sons and only grandson. For many years, Arnold and Grace spent summers camping at Canada Falls Lake where he was the “unofficial mayor.” He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Grace, in October 2009; and by his siblings, Dorothy Bilodeau and Robert Lyons. Surviving are their three children and spouses, Theodore and Kathy Lyons of Hollidaysburg, Pa., Nancy and Carl Schubach of Lowville, N.Y., and Bruce and Pauline Lyons of Standish; six grandchildren and spouses, Kim and Ian Hutchinson of Atlanta, Karin and Hal Brown of Norridgewock, Kathy and Billy Vandegrift of Elk Grove, Calif., Stephanie and Michael Powlin of Jamesville, N.Y., Michael and Didi Schubach of Lock Haven, Pa., and Alison and Darrell Dening of Corning, N.Y.; 12 great-grandchildren, Kylie Tudela and her husband, Derek, Eryka Quinn, Baylee Brown, Kaleb Brown, Seth Vandegrift, Sydney Vandegrift, Emma Powlin, Andrew Powlin, Matthew Schubach, Julia Schubach, Abigail Dening and Madeline Dening; many nieces and nephews. A service will be at the convenience of his family at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
