GORHAM – Dawn Marie (Mankowski) York, 38, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010, of breast cancer at her home with her loving family by her side. Born Sept. 17, 1971, in Bangor, to Carol Gagnon Baker and the late Vincent Mankowski, Dawn was raised in East Millinocket. She was a well-rounded student and dedicated athlete, participating in the school band, playing soccer, softball and most notably co-captaining three state championship basketball teams. She graduated from Schenck High School in 1989 and went to the University of Maine where she pursued a bachelor’s degree in education. In 1993, she graduated from the university and began enthusiastically teaching middle school in Sherman. She went on to teach middle school in Lincoln, Medway and ultimately Gorham, where she most recently taught algebra at Gorham High School. Dawn was an extremely caring woman, full of life and love, who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. An adventurous spirit, Dawn loved to travel and garden. She was extremely caring and had many close friends. Above all, Dawn was a devoted wife and mother who adored her boys. She was happiest spending time with them, playing games, hiking, traveling and going to the beach. Dawn will be deeply missed by all that knew her. Dawn was predeceased by her father, Vincent Mankowski; and her paternal grandparents, Roman and Elizabeth Mankowski of Northfield, Mass. Dawn is survived by her loving husband, Andy, and their two sons, Drew and Alex, of Gorham; mother, Carol Baker and her husband, Frank Baker, of East Millinocket; brother, John Mankowski and his wife, Amanda, and their three children, Emma, Ethan and Sophie of Lubbock, Texas; stepsisters, Raquel Baker of East Millinocket and Amy Baker of Cumberland; maternal grandparents, Alan and Geraldine Gagnon of East Millinocket; and three very dear aunts, Martha Stinson of Northfield, Mass., Jackie Prince of Nashua, N.H., and Sandra McCluskey of Millinocket. A funeral Mass will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 4, at St. Anthony’s Parish, 295 Brown St., Westbrook, where a reception will be after the service downstairs in the parish hall. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Grindstone Cemetery, Medway. Arrangements are made by Blais & Hay Funeral Home.
