OLD TOWN and ORONO – Laurence P. Berthiaume, 53, lost his battle to pancreatic cancer Saturday, June 5, 2010, at Cancer Center of America, Philadelphia. He was born July 18, 1956, in Worcester, Mass., a son of William E. Sr. and Rita L. (Lord) Berthiaume. Larry’s greatest passions in life were teaching and coaching. He started his teaching career at Washburn for four years and taught at Orono High School for the past 29 years. He truly enjoyed being a mentor to the many students and athletes he worked with during his 33 years of teaching and coaching. He was an amazing individual with a great sense of humor and he loved to sing. He enjoyed fishing, tying flies, his camp on West Lake, snowmobiling and four-wheeling. He refereed soccer and coached many sports, including hockey, soccer and baseball, but his true love was soccer. He also enjoyed cycling, woodworking, and following the Red Sox and Bruins. Larry loved life. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Cathy of Old Town; daughter, Angie Vaillancourt and her husband, Ryan, of Old Town; three grandchildren, Andrew, Alyssa and Rylee; his father, William Berthiaume Sr. of Worcester, Mass.; siblings, Joanne Gallant and her husband, Richard, of Whitinsville, Mass., William Berthiaume Jr. of Leicester, Mass., Ann-Marie Dufries and her husband, Gary, of Leicester, Mass., Judy Berthiaume and her companion, Paula Martineau, of Rochdale, Mass., Linda Colby and her husband, Wayne, of Leicester, Mass., and Barbara Masuzzo and her husband, Mark, of Oxford, Mass.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother; and a sister, Marilyn Sullivan. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 3 p.m. Friday at Parish of the Resurrection of the Lord, Holy Family Church, 429 Main St., Old Town. Immediately after the service all are invited to a luncheon and continued fellowship at Knights of Columbus Hall, 5 Gilman Falls Ave., Old Town.
