FREEPORT – Lorin Eugene “Skip” Oakes, 75, died Saturday, June 5, 2010, at his home after a long illness. Skip was born May 22, 1935, in Bangor, the son of Carroll and Helen Wilson Oakes Skip graduated from Bangor High School in 1954. He was very involved with Thomas School of Dance, Bangor, teaching ballroom dancing and appearing in many Savoyard musical and comedy productions. After high school he went to work for Merchant’s National Bank, first as a teller and then in the collections department. In June 1957, he married Beverly A. Russell and they moved from Bangor to South Freeport in 1968. Skip went to work for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. as a claims adjuster. He also started Harraseeket Builders and Maritime Insurance Corp. He retired in 1997 as vice president of claims from York Mutual Insurance Co. Skip was a former member of the Elks in Brunswick, and was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the out of doors, skiing often at Sugarloaf, Herman and Squaw mountains. He had a love for planes and aviation. He and his wife owned a RV home and spent much time traveling throughout the U.S. They also owned a boat, the Nauti-Oak, cruising the coast of Maine and the islands of Casco Bay. Surviving, in addition to his wife of Freeport are his father, Carroll Oakes; his sister, Carol Ann Pelletier; brother, Dana Oakes, all of Bangor; two children, Russell E. Oakes of Portland and Kelly Oakes Dent of Decatur, Ga.; five grandchildren, Sarah Oakes of Portland, Ryan E. Oakes of North Yarmouth, and Carmen, Scott and Lorin of Decatur, Ga.; and one great-grandson, Christopher Jonelle Oakes. All are invited to a service in celebration of his life 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at South Freeport Church. The family has requested that donations be made to VNA Home Health and Hospice, 50 Foden Road, South Portland, ME 04106.
