DOVER-FOXCROFT – Philip C. Hintz, 93, husband of the late Harriet (Goetsch) Hintz, died June 8, 2010, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born April 2, 1917, in Greenville, Pa., the son Louis H. and Harriet (Carlton) Hintz. Phil graduated from Thiel College, Greenville, Pa., in 1939, and received his Master of Science degree in dairy technology from The Ohio State University in 1953. He worked at food laboratories for Bordens, Syracuse, N.Y., Standard Brands in Connecticut, and retired from Nabisco Foods in 1983. He also worked for the Department of Commerce, Weather Bureau, for five years after serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years during World War II. Phil’s main outside interest was music. He played the organ for church services for more than 60 years and was organist for United Methodist Church, Dover-Foxcroft, for much of the time since he moved to Dover-Foxcroft in 1983. He also played tuba in Dover-Foxcroft Community Concert Band and was a member of Arcady Society. He had been ham radio operator since 1961 with the call W1UL. He will also be remembered for tutoring high school students in math and physics for several years. He was honored by their instituting a scholarship in his name at Foxcroft Academy. He was married to Evelyn Leukhardt, who died in the polio epidemic in 1949, leaving him with two young children, David and Ann Louise. He was also predeceased by his second wife, Harriet, with whom he had two children, Donald and Clayton; and two sisters, Ruth Knapp and Lucille Wilkins. Phil is survived by three sons, David Carlton Hintz of Syracuse, N.Y., Donald Edward Hintz and his wife, Margaret, of New Milford, Conn., and Clayton Maybury Hintz and his wife, Helen, of Topsham; a daughter, Ann Louise (Hintz) Cohen and her husband, Alan, of Meadville, Pa.; six grandchildren, Dr. Katharine (Hintz) Goldstein, Julie Hintz, Brett Cohen, Drew Cohen, Gregory Hintz and Justin Hintz; and five great-grandchildren. A graveside memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, in the family lot at Pine Grove Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. Dr. Margaret Sheffield officiating.
