PALMYRA – Ida Joyce (Green) Curtis, 85, passed peaceably June 16, 2010, at her residence with her family at her side. She was born Jan. 25, 1925, in Blaine, a daughter of Gale Piercean and Marion Ada (Piper) Green. She graduated from Beals College, Bangor. Ida will be remembered as a nurturer to everyone she knew and was in turn, loved by all. Everyone who met her was attracted to her light and love. A humble person, she was a wealth of information, especially the family genealogy. Ida was a legal secretary for Attorney Perry Furbush. She was a devoted military wife keeping her family affairs organized throughout her husband’s transfers to Iran, New York, Newfoundland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Germany, Montana, California, Aroostook County and the Pittsfield/Palmyra areas. She was an avid seamstress and enjoyed knitting and crocheting for her family. She enjoyed preserving her vegetables and fruits, and always had homemade soup in the refrigerator for her many hungry guests. A lifelong learner, Ida loved working at Echoes Magazine, a publication devoted to life in Aroostook County. She served as executive director of Sebasticook Association of Retarded Children, and was instrumental in founding its various outreach centers such as Sebasticook Farms and Marie Bradford School. She was a member of Palmyra Christmas Club. She is survived by her children, Carl Galen and wife, Sheila (Howland) Curtis, of Hudson, N.H., and their children, Bryan, Russell and Carla Curtis: Gary Wayne Curtis and his companion, Susan McMillan, of Newport, and Gary’s son, Christopher Curtis and Chris’ daughter, Jacqueline, of Florida: Richard Lee and wife, Celeste (Violette) Curtis, of Bangor, and their children, Terra Curtis of California, Garrett Curtis of Orono, and Avery Curtis of Bangor: Donna Joy (Cardozo Holden) Curtis and husband, Tom Pinkin, of Conn., and children, Nathan Cardozo of Washington state, and his son, Walker, Cassidy Holden of New York City, and Haley Holden of Portland; son-in-law, Gary Jordan of Gardner and his children, Christopher Jordan and Heather (Fry) Jordan; siblings, Opal Elizabeth (Green) and husband, Carl Edward Gray, of Newport, and their children, Sharon Gray of Corinna, Larry Gray of Newport and Bonnie Levesque of Newport: Wanda Marie (Green) and husband, Maynard Elmer Dahlgren, of Pittsfield, and their children, Rhonda and husband, Tim Crowe, Kirk and and wife, Gloria Dahlgren, of Pittsfield, and Jennifer and husband, Harry Cramm, of Pittsfield; half sister, Margaret Ann (Kinney) Thompson of Connecticut and their children, Scott Thompson and wife, Susan (Parent), and their children, Kelsey and Ryan, of Connecticut, Eric and wife, Julie Thompson, and their children, Emily and Benjamin, of Connecticut, Tammy and husband, Jeffrey Vuocolo and their children, Erica and Olivia, of Connecticut; and a half brother, Ronald Gene Kinney of Farmington Woods, Conn.; aunts, uncles, great-grandchildren, many special friends and neighbors located here, Aroostook County and New Brunswick. Ida was devoted to her brothers and sisters, and always treated in laws not only as part of the family, but also as best friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Maj. Donald William Curtis, U.S. Army Reserve, retired; a brother, Wendell Irving and wife, Francys (Smith) Green; and a daughter, Patricia Lynn (Dunbar) Jordan. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at Palmyra Village Cemetery. A luncheon and celebration of Ida’s life will be after at Millennium, 430 Oxbow Road, Palmyra.
