BAR HARBOR – Ruth J. McFarland, 76, passed away peacefully June 13, 2010, at home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Dover-Foxcroft, the daughter of Earl Weymouth and Harriet Reynolds. Ruth attended Bar Harbor High School. She loved wildlife and nature, and was an avid birdwatcher and gardener. She was a loving mother, grandmother and a caring, thoughtful neighbor. Ruth worked as a seamstress at Henry Macul Upholstery for 19 years, after which she worked for many years at the Opera House. She was a member of St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church. Ruth is survived by four children, Diane Alley of Frankfort, William McFarland, Donna McFarland, both of Bar Harbor, and Katherine Richardson and her husband, Earl, of Franklin; grandchildren, Dennis Alley and wife, Tammy, Janie Fogg and her partner, Brian, Jesse Fogg and his partner, Joanna, James, Nathan and Benjamin Richardson; and two great-grandchildren, Branden and Meagan Alley. She is also survived by two very special brothers-in-law, John Stewart of Bar Harbor and Earl Thurlow of Bass Harbor; sister Doris Martineau of Waterboro; her very dear friend and mentor, Edith Milbury of Bar Harbor; as well as many other special friends, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph; a sister, Viola Thurlow; as well as her parents. At her request, there will be no funeral service. There will be a memorial service held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
