AUBURN, Maine — A Maine company says it has shipped 600 feet of oil containment boom to the Gulf of Mexico after BP agreed to test the boom in its oil spill cleanup efforts.

Packgen President John Lapoint III said BP put in a trial order Monday night. He said BP expects to hold test trials off Alabama next week to determine if it meets expectations.

Packgen, which is based in Auburn, has been talking with BP for weeks about selling its boom to help contain oil that’s been spewing since an offshore oil rig exploded in April.

Lapoint said if the boom passes muster, he’s hopeful BP will order more. Packgen has about 15 miles of boom stored in a warehouse after manufacturing it in hopes BP would buy it.
