BANGOR – Bertha Cohen Frankel, 93, died peacefully June 17, 2010, with family by her side at a Bangor hospital. Bertha was born May 24, 1917, in Norwalk, Conn., the daughter of Morris and Minnie (Kenter) Cohen. Bertha was married for 51 years to the love of her life, Joseph A. Frankel. She graduated from Norwalk High School in 1935. She went on to graduate from Park City Hairdressing School in 1937. She and her husband opened Modern Hairstylists Salon, Norwalk, Conn., which they operated for 38 years. They retired to Virginia Beach, Va., where she lived until 2008. Since that time she had been happily residing at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Walter Yorzinski in Bangor. Bertha was a woman ahead of her time. She juggled between being a successful business owner/ hairdresser, and a loving and devoted mother and wife. She was an avid knitter and reader, and loved the piano and listening to music. Bertha was well known for her hairstyling talents and had won many awards at high fashion hairstyling shows in New York City. She was an active member of the Connecticut Hairdressers Association. She was a member of Sisterhood of Beth Israel Congregation, Norwalk, Conn. She was co-president of the sisterhood and historian at Kempsville Conservative Synagogue, Virginia Beach, Va. She loved all animals and was known for her beautiful gardens on Boulder Road, Norwalk, Conn. She loved spending time outside, especially at the beach. Far exceeding everything else was her love for her family. She is survived by her four children, 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one sister, many nieces and nephews. A service was held Sunday, June 20, at Magner Funeral Home. Burial was afterward at Beth Israel Cemetery, Norwalk, Conn.
