SOUTH PORTLAND – Jon M. Whitten, 72, died July 7, 2010, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough, of end stage renal disease. Jon was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Lincoln, son of the late Robert E. and Doris E. Whitten. He grew up in Lee and was educated in Lee schools. He attended Bates College and graduated from the University of Maine in 1962. Jon excelled in sports, playing basketball at Bates and pitching for the University of Maine baseball team. An avid outdoorsman, Jon loved his camp in Lee and spent a great deal of time hunting and fishing. Jon married Charlene (Morris) Whitten, June 27, 1964. He taught physical education at Lee Academy and was the athletic director at Bonny Eagle High School, where he coached an undefeated baseball team to the Triple C State Championship in 1966. Jon went to work as a process engineer at S.D. Warren, Westbrook, from 1966 until his retirement in 1991. Jon was predeceased by his brother, James, in 1996. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Charlene of South Portland; son, Michael Whitten of South Portland; his daughter, Julie and her husband, Thomas Fitzherbert, of South Portland; granddaughter, Madeline Fitzherbert; five nephews and four nieces. At Jon’s request there will be no funeral service. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life 1-4 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at his home on Sandy Hill Road.
