HAMPDEN – Donald Pitt Hanscom, 82, husband of the late Marilyn (Wentworth) Hanscom, went home to be with his Lord and Savior July 10, 2010, while at a Bangor health care facility. He was born July 21, 1927, in Lincoln, son of Pitt and Frances (Duplisea) Hanscom. Don was raised in West Hampden by Edwin and Virginia Carlson. Don was a graduate of Bangor High School and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a tremendous athlete and had a passion for sports. Don played semi-pro baseball and football in various leagues throughout Maine and Canada, and was also a professional boxer. In 1987, he was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame. Don worked for the Bangor Daily News in the circulation department for 37 years, retiring as circulation manager. He enjoyed working in the woods, gardening and farming. Don was a caring and generous man. He was always willing to give of his time and effort for others. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and as a Christian man. Don is survived by his children, Cheryl Millett and husband, David, of Chester, Rejina Morgan and husband, Ed, of Limerick, Alan Hanscom and wife, Debbie, of Hanson, Mass., Lance Hanscom and wife, Emily, of Blanco, N.M., Valerie Jameson and husband, Brian, of Orlando, Fla., and Scott Hanscom and his fiancee, Cindy Wilson, of Hampden; two half sisters, Kay Moody of Yarmouth and Dody Pastor of Anna Maria Island, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn, Aug. 18, 2009; and by a brother, Ralph Hanscom. Family and friends may visit 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 15, with Kirk Winters, pastor of the Rock Church, Bangor.
