NEW SWEDEN – Edmund F. Anderson, 98, beloved husband of Eloise (Larsson) Anderson, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2010, at a Presque Isle nursing facility. A native of New Sweden, Edmund was born April 1, 1912, at home, the son of John and Ella (Oberg) Anderson. He married Eloise Oct. 19, 1945, and together they had four children. Edmund was a farmer for more than 40 years, following in the footsteps of his father and even his grandfather, who had purchased their farmland from the state of Maine. He also worked at several clothing stores in Caribou, most recently as manager of the men’s department at L.S. Hall, until age 77. He was a member of New Sweden Baptist Church and joined Evangelical Covenant Church, New Sweden after marriage. Edmund was an avid cross-country skier, until age 92. He was a founding member of New Sweden Athletic Club in the 1930s, and served as their treasurer. He was also a member of New Sweden Planning Board from its beginning until he was in his 90s and served on New Sweden’s Centennial Steering Committee, town budget committee, school board, New Sweden Historical Society and planning committee of Nordic Heritage Center. He served as an assistant Scoutmaster as a young man, and was the present holder of New Sweden’s Boston Post Cane. Edmund proudly wore his “JAG TALAR SVENSKA” pin when he hosted at New Sweden Historical Museum to signify his fluency in Swedish. In addition to his wife, Eloise, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Roger Anderson and his wife, Marilyn, of Kennebunk, Vonla Murdock and her husband, Jeff, of Raymond, Dorothy Anderson and her husband, Richard Balagur, of Thetford, Vt., and a daughter-in-law, Maureen Anderson of Salem, N.H.; nine grandchildren, Erin and Ryan Lovejoy, Becky, Jenny, Jamey and Katey Anderson, Eamon and Tyler Anderson, and Annie Balagur; two stepgrandchildren, Ryan and Amy Murdock; many nieces and nephews. Edmund was predeceased by his son, Donald Anderson; brothers, Harold and Wilbert Anderson; and sisters, Mildred Lindberg, Evelyn Hedman and Adeline Ekman. Friends and family may call 4-6 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at Lancaster-Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at Evangelical Covenant Church, New Sweden, with Pastor T. Daniel Clayborne, officiating. Interment to be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Evangelical Covenant Church, New Sweden, or to any charity of choice.
