GUILFORD and LAKELAND, Fla. – Dr. Charles H. “Harry” Lightbody died July 21, 2010, in Florida. He was born and raised in Waterville. After graduating from Waterville High School in 1943, he joined the Army Air Force during Word War II. He became a navigator on a B-24 and flew missions from Italy during the war. After returning home in 1945 he enrolled in pre-med at Colby College and graduated in 1948. He met his future wife, Margaret, at Colby College and they were married in June 1949. They resided in Baltimore while Dr. Lightbody attended the University of Maryland Medical School, graduating in 1952. They then lived in Worcester, Mass., until Dr. Lightbody completed his rotating internship at Worcester City Hospital in 1954 and started his practice in Guilford. He joined the staff of the old Mayo Memorial Hospital, now Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft. He served as chief of medical staff, chairman of the obstetrics committee and member of the Credentials Community. He also served as a member of the board of directors of HAD No. 4 for many years. The Maine Medical Education Foundation was very important to him and for many years he brought student doctors to his practice in Guilford. A great concern of his was that Guilford always had a family doctor. He was instrumental with the planning and building of Guilford Medical Building. For many years “Doc” was involved with many community projects, serving on Guilford Planning Board and SAD No. 4 School Board. He was also a charter member of Guilford Kiwanis Club and was active in all of their charity projects. He was a member of Guilford United Methodist Church. “Harry,” as his friends called him, was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and skiing, and was instrumental in creating a ski resort on Squaw Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” (Horsch) Lightbody of Lakeland, Fla., and Guilford; a daughter, Laurie Crane and her partner, Donald Drisko, and daughters, Haley and Jessica of New Harbor; a son, James and his wife, Mary Lightbody, of Guilford and their three children, Kaitlyn, Erik and Hannah; a special family relative, Jane Redmond of Waterville; very special person, Chet Grindell and his wife, Ruthie, of California; three nephews, Robert, Charles and Alan Harrison; and all the wonderful people of Guilford. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at Guilford United Methodist Church with Pastor Stephen Dean officiating. Burial will be afterward at Blanchard Cemetery, Abbot.
