WESTBROOK – Thelma M. Spearen, 90, of Spring Street, formerly of Bangor, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010, at Springbrook Nursing Home. She was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Glenburn, the daughter of Fred and Carolyn Canning Knowles. She was raised in Bangor and graduated from Bangor High School in 1940. Thelma was an active member of First Church of Christ Scientist, Bangor, where she was on the board of directors and held many of the youth activities at her home. She was also a member of Franklin Historical Society. Thelma enjoyed her family, church family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, John O. Spearen. Thelma is survived by a daughter, Sandy Bolster and her husband, Steve, of Berea, Ky.; a son, David Spearen of Milbridge; daughter-in-law, Bobbie of Franklin; seven grandchildren, Trica Spinney and her husband, Robert – her loving guardians – of Westbrook, Christie Spearen of Moultonborough, N.H., Evan Spearen Bolster of Berea, Ky., Todd Spearen Bolster and his wife, Emilie, of Carmel, Ind., John Spearen of Westbrook, Mathew Spearen of Franklin and Mark Spearen of Westbrook; and two great-grandchildren, Charles and Abigail Spinney. She also had a special relationship with her nephew, Melvin Knowles and his wife, Lois Ann, and their family. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at Glenburn Evangelist Covenant Church, 911 Hudson Road, where a memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday. A celebration of her life will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at the home of her granddaughter, Trica Spinney, 252 Spring St., Westbrook. Arrangements are by Blais & Hay Funeral Home, Westbrook. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St., Bangor, ME 04401 or the Thelma Knowles Spearen Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 714, Westbrook, ME 04092 for a Bangor High School graduate.
