SULLIVAN – Charlotte G. Gray passed peacefully July 29, 2010, at Island Nursing Home, Deer Isle. She was born May 2, 1919, in Blue Hill, the daughter of Merle B. and Ethel (Robbins) Grindle Sr. Charlotte graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1938 and was a member of the 1940 class at Westbrook Seminary before transferring to Northern Conservatory of Music, Bangor, in 1941. She married Carle G. Gray, Oct. 3, 1941. The couple moved to Boston where she was employed by Raytheon Corp. while Carle was stationed in England in the U.S. Army Air Corps. They moved to Ellsworth in 1946 and constructed their small red cape cod home on Oak Street. Charlotte enjoyed life, was stylish and could be seen “ramming around” in her many red convertibles with the top down. She also enjoyed her retail antique business and “doing shows” from Portland to Eastport. She loved the sun and salt water at Berry Cove in Lamoine and her many trips to Nova Scotia on the Bluenose and Cat. Charlotte was a skillful pianist, a longtime pupil of Mary Hayes Hayford at Symphony House. She was an authoritarian although she answered only to the “One” authority over her. There was no mistaking what she wanted done, when or how. She was genuine and loved her family. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Carle of Sullivan; sons, Dudley Gray and wife, Susan, of Rangeley and Jeffrey Gray and wife, Linda, of Yarmouth; daughter, Julie Kesaris of Sullivan; four grandchildren, Rebecca, Adrian, Justin and Devin; and sister, Jane Cousins and husband, Raymond, of South Blue Hill. Interment will be private. Contributions in Charlotte’s memory may be made to Sullivan Volunteer Fire Department, 1888 U.S. Highway 1, Sullivan, ME 04664 and/or Island Nursing Home, 587 North Deer Isle Road, Deer Isle, ME 04627.
