VASSALBORO – Caroline Strong died Aug. 5, 2010, in Waterville, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born Feb. 16, 1928, in Augusta, to Ruth (Waterhouse) and Willard E. Strong. She graduated from Cony High School, Class of 1946. She was active in sports and played interscholastic field hockey, basketball and softball. After graduation from the University of Maine, Class of 1950, she became a teacher and coach at Houlton High School. In 1952, she joined the faculty at Thornton Academy and continued to teach physical education and coach. In 1956, she became a teacher, coach and dorm counselor with the Department of Defense school system. Her assignments took her to schools in Chateauroux and Paris, France; Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, Germany; Madrid and Zaragoza, Spain; Japan; Turkey; and England. During vacations she had the opportunity to travel, which also included Africa. Skiing was a passion and she enjoyed many of the great mountains of Europe, the U.S. and Maine. She worked with handicapped skiers on Maine mountains, and was a member and played golf at Natanis, Vassalboro. She was a proponent of women’s athletics and was a friend of University of Maine Women’s Basketball team. She was a member of Viles Arboretum, past president of Nature Club and a longtime member of Riverside Church. Throughout several years, Caroline mentored students in the Augusta school system and supported a child in Child Fund International. She is survived by her sister, Helen Strong Hamilton and husband, George, of Bow, N.H.; a nephew, Christopher Strong Hamilton and his wife, Jen, and great-nephew, Keegan Watson Hamilton, of Sandown, N.H.; many cousins and wonderful friends. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Riverside Church, Riverside Drive, Route 201, Vassalboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Riverside Church Memorial Fund, care of Jim Nichols, 127 Old Lewiston Road, West Gardiner, ME 04345 or a charity of one’s choice.
