OLD TOWN – 1st. Sgt. Donald Victor Vereault, U.S. Marine Corps, retired, died Aug. 17, 2010, at a Bangor hospital. He was attended to by his family, friends and a wonderful medical team. His daughter Kara gave many years of unselfish love and help during Don’s illness that spanned several years. He was born May 25, 1932, the son of George V. and Villa L. (Gray) Vereault. Don left home shortly after graduating from Brewer High School in 1950. He defended his country for the next 20 years, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a combat veteran in the Korean War and Vietnam War, and was the recipient of various awards, including the Purple Heart. Don’s second occupation was at Diamond International Corp., later James River Corp., at the Old Town paper mill. He retired in 1992 after 22 years of enjoyable employment. While in the Marine Corps, Don met an outstanding nurse, Mary Anne Dalton. He married her in 1959. Together they had six wonderful children, Donald II, James, Sean, Kara, Moira and Edmund; and one grandchild, Sarah. Don’s wife, Mary Anne, passed away 20 years ago in 1990. He was also predeceased by his mother, father; sisters, Margaret, Cecile and Dorothy; and brother, George. In addition to his children and grandchild, Don is survived by his daughters-in-law, Barbara Vereault and Charlene Cook; his sister, Marjorie Lacadie; brother, Charles Vereault; many special nieces and nephews. Don’s body has been donated to the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. At his request, there will be no services.
