BRUNSWICK – William Stanley “Stan” Williams, 89, formerly of Sherman, died Aug. 21, 2010, at Maine Medical Center, Portland. He was born July 4, 1921, at 21 Fourth St., Fair Haven, Vt., the son of Robert H. and Winifred (Parry) Williams. He was proud of his Welsh heritage and spoke many times of the beautiful hills and lovely people of northern Wales. In 1939, he graduated from Fair Haven High School. He worked at Fellows Gear Shaper, Springfield, Vt., and as World War II loomed, he joined the service and spent much of World War II in Europe, while stationed in England, France and Belgium. He was proud of being a veteran. In 1946, he married Priscilla R. Williams, with whom he spent 63 years. They worked together on their farm overlooking beautiful Mount Katahdin. The family farm was a source of joy and wonderful memories. Stan had a passion for baseball and once had the highest batting average in the state of Vermont. He continued playing baseball in town leagues when he moved to Maine and was known as the short power hitter with the 36-inch bat. In addition, he worked in the family business of potato growing until his retirement in 1986. He enjoyed all aspects of potato growing and was very proud of the high quality of certified seed potatoes produced and sold to other growers. Stan had many friends of all ages, whom he treated as extended family. He was always comfortable conversing with friends, as well as with new acquaintances. It was often said about him that you could leave him sitting in the middle of a large crowd and a half-hour later, he’d have a bevy of new friends to introduce to you. He could always tell a good story and had a wonderful sense of humor. His family was most important to him and he enjoyed numerous family celebrations throughout the years. His birthday on the Fourth of July was always a treat. He will be missed by family and by all who knew him and will especially be missed by his cat, Callie. He was predeceased by his parents; his siblings, Alfred, Emrys and Dorothy; and his wife, Priscilla. He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca A. Williams and her husband, James Henderson, of Harpswell, and Sheila W. Mather and her husband, Dana, of South Portland; his sister-in-law, Eula Roberts and her husband, Judson, of Augusta; four grandchildren, Brady G. Williams, Leslie E. Gardner and her husband, Doug, Justin W. Mather and Angela Johnson, and Joshua H. Mather; and four great-grandchildren, Sophia Gardner, Madison Gardner, Cameron Mather and Colby Mather. His love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was abundant and he was proud of their varied and numerous accomplishments. In addition, he leaves many wonderful friends. Private memorial services for family and friends will be held noon Thursday, Aug. 26, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, attention MTV, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, ME 04330 or the charity of one’s choice.
