BANGOR and NEWTON, Mass. – Joan Mary (Shiminski) Macchi, 81, passed away with dignity Aug. 23, 2010, at home from metastatic lung cancer. Born April 9, 1929, in Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Anthony John and Mary Eleanor (Brogan) Shiminski. She graduated from Worcester South High School, Clark University and Simmons College. She taught math and science at Kents Hill School, Kents Hill, and Bancroft School, Worcester, Mass., where she was also dean of students. After earning her master’s degree in library science from Simmons College, she was an elementary school librarian at Ward School, Newton, Mass. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Jeffrey Pittis; grandchildren, Matthew, Patrick and Jennifer Pittis, all of Bangor; brother, James Shiminski; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and best friend of 44 years, I. Alden Macchi; and her brother, Paul Shiminski. The family thanks her many friends at Hammond Street Senior Center, neighbors and Hospice of Eastern Maine. Friends are invited to call 4-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 768 Ohio St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the Mass at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
