GEORGETOWN, Mass. – Mrs. Elsie (Gordon) Handy, 101, formerly of Bangor, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at Merrimack Valley Hospice House, Haverhill, Mass. She was born Oct. 30, 1908, in Mattawamkeag, daughter of the late Asher and Carry M. (Springer) Gordon. Mrs. Handy was educated in Mattawamkeag and Lincoln school systems, graduating from Mattanawcook Academy. For more than 18 years she was employed as a division manager for Sears-Roebuck, Portland and Bangor. While in Maine she was a member of Bangor Nature Club and Norumbega Club of Bangor, on the board of directors for Bangor Visiting Nurses Association, a member of First Universalist Church, Bangor, where she was a member of the guild and also taught Sunday school, and was a member and past worthy matron of Pine Tree Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing cards, camping, fishing, swimming, sewing, knitting, crocheting and gardening. Mrs. Handy supported the March of Dimes and United Way. She moved to Georgetown, Mass., in 2004. She was wife of the late Clayton W. Handy, who died in 1990. Her survivors include two daughters, Darlene Ertha of Georgetown, Mass., and Kay and her husband, Michael Matarazzo, of Austin, Texas; a son, John Handy and his companion, Theresa Porcaro, of Everett, Mass.; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the memorial service 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Carleton Home, 27 Andover St., Georgetown, Mass.
