CALAIS – A. John Sherrard, 81, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at Atlantic Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Calais. John was born July 15, 1929, in Charlotte, one of eight children to Harry and Alfretta (Crompton) Sherrard. He started driving oil trucks for Dead River Co. and eventually worked his way up to service manager. At the time of his retirement in October 1991, John was employed the longest of any employee for Dead River Co., with 43 years of service. John was a master plumber, master electrician and a self taught carpenter. He was proud to be a born again Christian and was a former member of the men’s group at Calais United Methodist Church. John was a former member of Lion’s Club, Knights of Pythias and St. Croix Bowling Club. He enjoyed building homes and camps, woodworking and fishing. Surviving are his loving wife, Betty (Leeman) Sherrard, whom he married Sept. 19, 1948, in Pembroke; four children, John M. Sherrard and his wife, Sandra, of Calais, Suzanne Reynolds and her husband, Herbert, of Etna, Jeff Sherrard and his wife, Doreen, of Arizona and Maria Tickle and her husband, Andrew, of Calais; one brother, Stan Sherrard of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his two faithful canine companions, Minnie and Snuggles. Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside service 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at Calais Cemetery with Pastor Bob Hinton officiating.
