CALAIS – Elizabeth “Betty” Smith, 85, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at New Horizons, Calais, where she resided for the last year. Betty was born Jan. 30, 1925, in Dennysville, daughter of the late Curtis and Mabel Lyons. She attended Dennysville area schools and married Carl A. Smith. They lived in Eastport for more than 20 years before moving to Calais in 1962. Betty was a member of Calais United Methodist Church, Georgia Circle of United Methodist Women and Orion Chapter No. 45 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed shopping, going out to eat, wintering in Zephyrhills, Fla., visiting her daughter in North Carolina, and spending quality time with her family and friends. In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by three brothers, Harland Lyons, and Vinal and William Stewart. Surviving are her three daughters, Rebecca Stanhope and her husband, Loring, of Baring, Patricia McCoubrey and her husband, George, of Calais, and Shirley Jack and her husband, Thomas, of Clayton, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Alan Stanhope and his wife, Tracy, of Simi Valley, Calif., Brian Stanhope and his wife, Angela, of Charleston, S.C., Sherri Reynolds and her husband, Robert, of Calais, William McCoubrey and his wife, Karen, of New Hartford, Conn., Carl McCoubrey of Calais, Cathy Jack of Clayton, N.C., and Melissa Freeman and her husband, Richard, of Clayton, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lila Lyons of Zephyrhills, Fla.; a cousin, Lewis Lyons; many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, at Calais Cemetery. Donations in Betty’s memory may be made to Community Health and Counseling Hospice, P.O.
