KENDUSKEAG – Robert Neal Stearns, 78, died Sept. 10, 2010, in Bangor. He was born July 18, 1932, in Fitchburg, Mass., the son of Herbert S. and Dorothy B. (Mitchell) Stearns. Robert graduated from Hermon High School and served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a field radio repairman during the Korean War. His employment throughout the years was mainly in maintenance and mechanical and electronic repairs. He loved gadgets and tinkering. Robert also had a great love of music and played the harmonica, the accordion and “the trumpet.” He was an active member of Messiah Baptist Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. Surviving are four children, Tamara Stevens and her husband, John, of Springfield, Mass., and their children, Erin, Sara, Corrie and David, Rachel Cooley of Nixa, Mo., and her children, Kayla, Joshua, Rebekah and Kyle, Timothy Michael Stearns of Maple Haven Adult Residential Care, Corinth, and Susanna Quinn and her husband, David, of Levant; two cousins, Walter and Kenny Mitchell; and his uncle, Kenneth Mitchell of Rhode Island. He was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine Ruth (Vautin) Stearns; and he will be remembered by his dear friend, Betty Leland. A service honoring and celebrating Robert’s life will be held noon Friday, Sept. 17, at Messiah Baptist Church, 985 Union St., Bangor, where family and friends may visit 11 a.m. until the time of service. A reception will be immediately afterward. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made directly to Tamara Stevens, who will hold such funds in trust for the support of Robert’s son, Michael.
