DURHAM, N.H. — University of New Hampshire students can say they’ve gone fishin’ without skipping class.

The school is offering an elective course called “Fly Fishing and the American Experience.” American Studies professor Bill Ross says it may seem like a specialized topic, but it will allow students to explore a wide range of subjects, from literature and art to business and biology.

Students will learn about fly fishing techniques, stream ecology and local rivers. Ross says one focus will be how the American landscape and ways of thinking transformed fly fishing from its British roots.

Besides the usual term papers and exams, students will be required to complete a 10-hour service learning project, such as stream cleanups. And they’ll also do some fishing.
