Singer and pop culture phenom Lady Gaga was in Portland Monday at a rally promoting a
bill in Congress that would, if approved, drop the controversial “don’t ask, don’t tell”
policy on gays serving in the military. Will a figure like Ms. Gaga – though popular –
change any minds on this issue? Will she energize average Mainers who may be
sympathetic to the plight of gays in the military to now take action by contacting their
congressional representative and senators? Or is it more likely that those attending the
event are drawn by celebrity, not politics? Extra-credit question: who among the state’s
congressional delegation can name at least one Lady Gaga song?
