WOOLAND – Shirley (Ouellette) Simon, 73, returned home to her Father in heaven noon Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, after a brave battle with ovarian cancer. She was born March 20, 1937, in St. John, daughter of the late Adolphe Sr. and Flossie (Sturgeon) Ouellette. Some of her life accomplishments were being the first woman to hold a commercial driver’s license in Maine and also the first female school bus driver at Woodland Consolidated School, Woodland. She was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Caribou, and a member of the former Elizabeth Chapter, Eastern Star. Shirley also volunteered for Battered Woman’s Shelter and Crisis Hotline. She has been a member of Caribou United Baptist Church for 47 years and also attended Abundant Life Mission, Woodland. Having been a truck driver’s wife and driver herself, she held a special place in her heart for truck drivers and their families. Her life mission was always caring for other’s needs above her own. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Roger. She was a devoted mother to all who entered their home, but her natural born children were Roger James, Ronald Steven, Carrie Simon-Strelka, Franklin Dale and Shelia Simon-Aleman. Her special foster child of 30 years is Sylvio Madore of Woodland. She is survived by her 11 sisters and brothers, Doris Thibodeau of Caribou, Thelma Kelly of New Sweden, Pauline Nadeau of St. Francis, Adolphe Ouellette Jr. of Colbert, Wash., Franklin Ouellette of Bangor, Bertha Hotchkiss of Tucson, Ariz., Verna O’Leary of Caribou, Leola Onerato of Kenduskeag, Thomas Pelletier of St. Francis, Gordon Pelletier of Hermon and Roland Soucie of Allagash. Her loving grandchildren are Jamie, Keith, Levi, Jessica, Heather, Cher, Harley, Ashley, Carli, Sarah, Frankie D, Victoria and Nathan. She had 32 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Richard and Patrick Ouellette, Mable Albert and Sadie Plourde. A very special thank you to Jamie, Sheila and Stephanie for their loving care of Mom during her final days with us. Funeral services will be held noon Friday, Sept. 24, at Caribou United Baptist Church, 74 High St., Caribou. Calling hours will be 11 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. After the services all are invited to a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at the church fellowship hall.
